Our Sustainable Approach
At ITT, our solutions are engineered for life, and our corporate citizenship solutions are no different. By working at both spectrums of the water crisis, in both developed and developing countries, we believe ITT Watermark can create holistic, sustainable solutions that address the critical role water plays in public health, economic development and global security, both today and for years to come.
We recognize that ITT alone cannot solve the global water crisis and are partnering with leading nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations to create extraordinary impact. In every situation, we remain focused on the future and strive to implement proven models that empower communities to manage local water resources long after our projects are complete.
Overall, we believe sustainability is best demonstrated by accountability and will continue to monitor and report on our projects' successes and failures at frequent intervals.
Our Partners
ITT and our partners – Water For People, Mercy Corps and China Women's Development Foundation – share a common belief and approach. We believe the best way to create sustainable results is to empower local communities. Together, we act as indirect facilitators and trainers, providing water technology, sanitation facilities and hygiene education. These solutions allow local governments, the private sector and community members to effectively operate and manage water systems on their own year after year.
Providing and Protecting Water Resources: Schools
Providing Water: By the end of 2010, ITT will fulfill its initial commitment to bring safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to 300 schools and more than 200,000 students and teachers in Asia and Latin America.
In 2011-2013, ITT is expanding its commitment to deliver water and sanitation solutions to more schools in more water-stressed regions of the developing world. In India and China, ITT will support new school projects with our partners, Water For People and China Women's Development Foundation. ITT will also launch new school projects in Central and South America. In countries where ITT has completed projects, such as Honduras and Guatemala, we will work with employees to monitor the solutions we have funded and to ensure they deliver safe water for years to come.
Protecting Water: In developed countries, ITT will support programs that empower youth to solve the water and sanitation issues faced by their peers through our sponsorship of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and World Water Monitoring Day. Through these programs, ITT will inspire students to protect water resources and advance solutions related to the global water crisis.
Providing and Protecting Water Resources: Emergencies
Providing Water: Since launching ITT Watermark in 2008, ITT responded with water supplies during eight global emergencies, including Pakistan and Haiti, and proactively trained regional teams of emergency responders in China, Guatemala and Democratic Republic of Congo. Overall, these efforts have provided life-saving water for more than 300,000 disaster victims around the world. In 2011-2013, ITT will continue to provide critical water supplies in the aftermath of emergencies by deploying our product and financial resources through our partner, Mercy Corps.
Protecting Water: We will also work in collaboration with the most experienced global humanitarian relief and development nongovernmental organizations to protect water resources in highly vulnerable communities before disaster strikes. Through this new component of ITT Watermark, ITT will have an increased opportunity to leverage our full range of assets, including our product, global presence and the expertise of our people.
