West Springfield, MA (WWLP) - Access to clean water is a worldwide issue. Eighth grade students from West Springfield Middle School found out how scientists keep track of our water's health.
As part of National Environmental Education Week, the students took part in a water testing experiment. A runoff pond behind the school was tested for pH levels, turbidity and oxygen.
Students gathered the water into test tubes, added chemicals , mixed well and watched
for the results. While not drinkable, the pond received a clean bill of health.
The program was funded by ITT Power Solutions of West Springfield. Their ITT
WATERMARK philanthropy program provides safe water solutions, sanitation and
hygiene education to developing countries.
Volunteer employees work locally with educational programs to highlight the
importance of safe water.
