Sri Lanka, July 22, 2009 – Following May’s end to the Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war, thousands of displaced civilians in that island nation now have access to clean drinking water thanks to ITT Watermark and its partners.
At the Manikfarm refugee camp, ITT water treatment equipment has been installed on site by ITT Watermark partner, Mercy Corps - together with ITT’s local partner, ISB Services Limited - meeting the daily drinking-water needs of 40,000 camp residents.
The ITT/Watermark supplied equipment includes mobile water filtration systems that were previously used for disaster relief after the December 2004 Tsunami hit Sri Lanka. At that time, the Sri Lanka company ISB provided local coordination and support. ITT Corporation’s Director of Philanthropy, Bjorn von Euler said that, “After the tsunami disaster relief efforts ended in Sri Lanka, ITT stored and refurbished the mobile water treatment systems in its facility in Thailand. Through our ITT Watermark partner, Mercy Corps, and again, with great support from ISB of Sri Lanka, we were able to use our network and partners to install these water treatment systems to make a difference for the displaced civilians in the refugee camp.”
